Electrolyte Drink Refreshing, Real & Ridiculously Easy
That first-sip face says it all…
turns out something this simple can taste that good!
The drink that lives in our fridge all summer long…
Tangy, a little sweet, and somehow better than anything that you would buy in a bottle.
The kind of thing that takes five minutes to make and leaves you wondering why you ever paid for sports drinks in the first place.
Here's a hot take to think about: chugging plain water all summer might actually be working against you.
It sounds backwards, but it happens more than you would think.
You feel thirsty, foggy, a little "off," so you drink more water… and somehow you still feel just as thirsty an hour later.
That isn’t exactly a water problem. It is usually an electrolyte problem.
And once you fix that, everything else evens out.
Here is what is actually going on, and the drink I make instead of reaching for a $5 sports drink with a label filled with ingredients that most of us can't pronounce.
Why Plain Water Isn't Always Enough
When you sweat, you are not just losing water. You are losing sodium, potassium, and other minerals that your body needs to actually hold onto the water you are drinking and properly use it.
Drink glass after glass of plain water without replacing those minerals, and you can end up diluting what little balance you have left. That is when the brain fog creeps in, the thirst doesn't quit, and you feel more drained than hydrated, even though you have technically been "doing everything right."
If you have had one of those hot, sluggish afternoons where water just isn't cutting it, this is usually why.
Most store-bought sports drinks solve this the easy way, with a pile of salt and sugar, food dye, and a long list of ingredients that don't mean much to the average person. They do work, sort of, but they also come with a sugar spike, a price tag that adds up fast, and a lot of stuff your body doesn't actually need.
And if you have noticed your kids getting cranky and headachy after a hot day playing outside, even with a water bottle in hand the whole time, this is often the missing piece for them too. Kids sweat, forget to drink consistently, and don't always know how to describe "I feel off," they just get whiny and tired. A little extra sodium and potassium can make a bigger difference than another cup of plain water.
So, a few summers ago, I started making my own.
Hi, I'm Lindsay
I am a nutritionist who believes food should feel simple, satisfying, non-restrictive, and something that actually works in real life.
Because real life isn't just perfectly plated "healthy" meals you see trending online. It is quick dinners, family favorites, comfort foods, and the meals you throw together when you are tired and just need something that works.
Most of what you will find here is built around supporting your hormone health, digestion, and steady energy, all without overcomplicating things or turning food into something stressful.
There's room for all of it. Balanced meals, fun meals, everyday meals. When food is built in a way that supports your body, it doesn't have to feel restrictive or like you are constantly starting over.
I share a mix of recipes, simple strategies, and real-life approaches to help you feel more balanced, nourished, and supported in your body. In a way that actually fits into your life
A Summer Staple in Our House
This one didn't come from a big plan. It came from being tired of buying electrolyte packets that were mostly sugar and citric acid dressed up as "hydration support."
It started with playing around with real citrus, a splash of coconut water, and just enough honey and salt to round it out. The first batch disappeared in a day.
Now it just lives in our fridge all summer. My kids ask for it daily through out the hot months. I keep a big jar going and remake it the second it's empty, which, if I'm honest, is more often than I originally expect.
It is the kind of drink that feels almost too simple to work as well as it does. A little citrus, a little salt, a little sweetness, and suddenly you've got something that tastes like a treat and actually does something useful for your body at the same time.
Why This Drink Works
This isn't just juice with a fun name. Each ingredient is doing a job:
Orange juice → brings natural sweetness, vitamin C, and a good dose of potassium, one of the main electrolytes your body loses through sweat
Lemon and lime juice → add brightness and tang, and a little extra vitamin C to balance the sweetness
Coconut water → this is the real workhorse here, naturally rich in potassium, sodium, magnesium, and other minerals that help your body actually hold onto fluid instead of running straight through it
Himalayan or sea salt → replaces the sodium you lose through sweat, which is often the missing piece when plain water isn't quenching your thirst
Raw honey → a touch of natural sweetness that also helps your body absorb everything else a little better
Put it all together and you get something that's tangy, a little sweet, and genuinely refreshing, without the crash or the ingredient list you need a dictionary for.
It is the contrast that makes it work. The tartness from the citrus, the roundness from the coconut water, that small hit of salt you don't really taste on its own but would absolutely notice if it were missing. Nothing here is complicated, but together it does exactly what an electrolyte drink is supposed to do.
Real citrus, a splash of coconut water, and a little honey… this is where the magic happens.
Summer Electrolyte Drink
Ingredients:
1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
1/8 teaspoon Himalayan or sea salt
1 tablespoon raw honey, to taste
2 cups coconut water
Also great with added pineapple, kiwi, or strawberry
citrus, salt, honey, and coconut water…
The whole lineup is that simple!
Instructions:
Juice the fruit either with a juicer or by hand.
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until the honey is dissolved.
Store in a sealed mason jar in the fridge.
Sip it straight from the jar or dress it up with a splash of sparkling water for that patio cocktail feeling.
From blender to fridge in about 5 minutes…
That’s all it takes!
Tips for the Best Flavor
No juicer? No problem. If you want to add pineapple, kiwi, or other fruit that's tricky to juice by hand, just toss it straight into the blender. You will get a little pulp (which is really just fiber), but if you want it smooth, strain it through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
Make it a mocktail. Add your favorite sparkling water to turn this into a summer patio drink that still does something good for you.
Double it. If you've got a jar big enough, make a double batch. This one goes fast, especially with kids in the house.
Taste as you go. Start with a tablespoon of honey and adjust from there. Citrus varies a lot depending on how ripe it is, so a little taste test before storing goes a long way.
Enjoy It With
This drink fits into pretty much any hot-weather moment:
After a workout, a walk, or an afternoon in the yard
Alongside a light lunch on a day that feels too hot to cook
Poured over ice on the porch with the sparkling water twist
Packed in a cooler for the beach, the pool, or a long day of errands in the heat
It also travels well. I'll fill a jar before we head out for the day and it holds up in a cooler just fine, which makes it an easy swap for the sugary drinks that usually end up in the beach bag.
Simple Ingredients, Real Hydration
You don't need a packet of powder or a drink with a dozen ingredients that most can't pronounce to feel hydrated in the summer. Sometimes it really is just citrus, salt, and a little sweetness, put together in the right way.
Try It This Week
If summer has had you feeling thirsty no matter how much water you drink, foggy by mid-afternoon, or just a little "off" on the hot days, this is worth keeping in your fridge.
It takes five minutes, uses ingredients that you can actually pronounce, and costs a fraction of what you would spend on bottled electrolyte drinks all summer long.
And it's a good reminder that hydration is not only about how much you drink, but also about what is actually in what you are drinking.
Hormone health, digestion, and energy are all influenced by the bigger picture, including the nervous system and how supported the body feels day to day.
