Homemade Taco Seasoning Simple, Flavorful & No Additives

Your new go-to taco seasoning

Simple, flavorful, and ready when you need it.

There is something special about taco night.

The smell of spices warming in a pan.
The sound of vegetables sizzling.
Everyone wandering into the kitchen asking, “What smells so good?”

But if you’ve ever flipped over a store-bought taco seasoning packet, you will notice that the ingredient list often includes additives, anti-caking agents, excess sodium, and ingredients you likely would not keep in your own pantry.

And the truth is — taco seasoning does not need any of that.

With just a handful of real spices, you can make a homemade taco seasoning that is richer in flavor, more customizable for your family, and supportive of balanced, nourishing meals.

Once you start making your own, it is hard to go back.

Hi, I’m Lindsay

I am a nutritionist who believes that food should feel simple, satisfying, non-restrictive and should actually work in real life.

Most of what you will find here is built around meals that will support your hormone health, digestion, and steady energy. All without overcomplicating things, without being restrictive, or turning food into something stressful.

I share recipes of all types, simple strategies, and real-life approaches to help you feel more balanced, nourished, and supported in your body day to day.

Why Make Your Own Taco Seasoning?

Making your own seasoning blends is one of the simplest ways to upgrade the quality of your meals.

It takes less than two minutes to mix together, stores beautifully in your spice cabinet, and gives you full control over what goes into your food.

Homemade taco seasoning allows you to:

  • Avoid additives and fillers

  • Control the level of salt and spice

  • Adjust flavors for kids or sensitive stomachs

  • Add depth and warmth using real spices

  • Create meals that feel both comforting and nourishing

When you cook with simple spices like cumin, paprika, garlic, and oregano, you are not just adding flavor, you are building layers of warmth and complexity that make food feel satisfying.

And when meals feel satisfying, they are more likely to support steady energy and balanced blood sugar.

The Flavor Profile of a Good Taco Seasoning

A balanced taco seasoning should have a few key elements:

Warmth: cumin, cinnamon, and chili powder
Depth: smoked paprika and coriander
Savory notes: garlic and onion powder
Herbal brightness: oregano
Optional heat: cayenne pepper and chili flakes

These ingredients work together to create that familiar taco flavor most people love, but with a fresher, more vibrant taste than anything from a packet.

Smoked paprika is one ingredient that really elevates the blend. It adds a subtle smokiness that makes tacos, bowls, and roasted vegetables taste like they’ve been slow-cooked for hours.

Ways to Use Taco Seasoning

Once you have a jar of this seasoning in your kitchen, you’ll find yourself reaching for it constantly.

Of course, it is perfect for tacos, but it also works beautifully in many other meals.

Try it with:

  • Ground beef, chicken, or turkey

  • Black beans or lentils

  • Roasted sweet potatoes

  • Roasted cauliflower or peppers

  • Scrambled eggs for a savory breakfast

  • Rice or quinoa bowls

  • Taco salads

You can even sprinkle it over roasted vegetables before baking to instantly create a Southwest-inspired flavor.

It’s one of those blends that quietly becomes a staple in your kitchen.

Simple spices, real ingredients..

This is where the flavor starts.

How to Use

Use 1–2 tablespoons per pound of meat, beans, tofu, or roasted vegetables.

If cooking ground meat, add the seasoning while browning the meat, after draining the grease, along with 2–3 tablespoons of water to help distribute the spices evenly.

Tips for the Best Flavor

Notes:

The cinnamon adds a gentle warmth while the coriander provides a subtle citrusy brightness that balances the richness of the chili powder and cumin.

Make it smoky
Add ½ teaspoon smoked chipotle powder for a deeper smoky flavor.

Make it mild
Skip the cayenne and/or chili flakes if cooking for kids or spice-sensitive eaters.

Make it bold
Add an extra ½ teaspoon cumin for a richer, earthier taste.

Batch prep
Double or triple the recipe so you always have some ready to go.

Storage This seasoning will stay fresh for 3–4 months when stored in an airtight container away from heat and light.

Pro tip: Label the jar with the date so you know when you made it.

Pair It with These Recipes

This taco seasoning works beautifully in balanced bowls and vegetable dishes.

Try it with:

  • Roasted root vegetables for a Southwest-inspired bowl

  • A fresh salsa verde for bright flavor

  • Grain bowls with quinoa or rice

  • Taco salads with avocado and lime

It’s also fantastic sprinkled over roasted sweet potatoes or used to season black beans for quick tacos.

Real Flavor Makes Meals More Satisfying

When meals include fresh and real herbs and spices, whole foods, protein, and healthy fats, they naturally become more satisfying.

That satisfaction matters.

It helps support stable energy, fewer cravings, and meals that leave you feeling nourished instead of constantly searching for the next snack.

And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as making your own seasoning.

Try It This Week

Try mixing up a jar of this taco seasoning and using it in a meal this week — whether that’s tacos, roasted vegetables, or a simple bowl with protein, healthy fats, and colorful plants.

Small shifts in how we cook can make a meaningful difference. Choosing simple, real ingredients instead of ultra-processed seasoning packets is one small way to support your body with food that feels nourishing, satisfying, and supportive of steady energy.

But food is only one piece of the bigger picture.

Hormone health, digestion, and energy levels are deeply connected to the nervous system and how safe and supported the body feels on a daily basis. When those systems begin to regulate together, things like cravings, digestion, mood, and energy can start to feel much more stable.

If you're interested in learning more about supporting your hormones, nervous system, and gut health in a deeper and more sustainable way, that’s exactly what I teach inside The Hormone and Nervous System Reset.
